The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. – Proverbs 11:25 NLT
An open mic is an event where anyone with a guitar and a song can strum and sing a couple numbers. The other night Lisa and I went to one of our favorites, where the talent level is high. All the better singer-songwriters hang out there.
We kind of choked.
We did our two songs but were uncomfortable and couldn’t find our “zone.” It wasn’t a disaster, but it was below our standard. After we finished we walked off stage, and I wanted to just keep walking.
Guitar for sale. Cheap.
We got a few compliments, which for some reason made me feel worse. We sat watching the other songwriters sing. Part of me hoped someone else would mess up, or at least be a little less than amazing. Didn’t happen.
But something else did...
A songwriter we didn’t know came up to our table and showed me the lyrics and chords for her songs. She didn’t play guitar and needed someone to accompany her.
I looked at her music and saw chords such as A♭, B♭, D♭. If you don’t play guitar, trust me, these are awkward to play on guitar. I almost said no. Couldn’t she see I was sulking?
But she needed help. So I said yes.
And it went... fine. I put a capo on my guitar and played easier chords, struggling to transpose in my head as we went. If you don’t understand what that means, don’t worry. The point is, she sang her songs and was happy. And so was I. Those who refresh others will... be refreshed.
