He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues people under me. – Psalm 144:2 NIV
This is such a powerful verse. Let’s break it down and meditate on it together.
The verse opens with “He is my loving God.” He is my Father, He wraps me in His arms. I cuddle on His lap.
He is “my fortress”—like a stone castle surrounded by a moat, protected on all sides, so too God surrounds and protects me.
“My stronghold” is that impregnable place where none can reach me. I experience God’s protection. The enemy cannot get at me.
God is “my deliverer.” Jesus has rescued me by His death on the cross. I am delivered once and for all from my sins.
God is also “my shield.” He stops the enemies’ arrows. He is my personal protection. Because God is personal, He wants a relationship with me.
God is the one “in whom I take refuge.” Lord, I run to You today. You see and know all my troubles and thoughts. Take them into Your hands; I give them to You. My Father is also the one “who subdues people under me.” Lord, let me be a witness to those around me today. Open my mouth and let Your words come out.
Two other places in Psalms come to mind which support Psalm 144:2. Psalm 46 opens with a very similar thought: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change” (verses 1-2a). And Psalm 9:10 also affirms God’s protection and faithfulness for us: “And those who know Thy name will put their trust in Thee; For Thou, O Lord, hast not forsaken those who seek Thee.”
Such is our God. May You feel His closeness and protection today.
