You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others... – Matthew 5:14, 16 ESV
Growing up I did not know much about Jesus, mostly because I did not grow up in a Christian environment. I wasn’t educated on who Jesus was. My family would pop into church for Christmas or Easter, but that was about it.
I did not think Jesus was the way to God. I didn’t even know he was a way to God. I thought he was a sage, or an enlightened teacher. I considered him to be someone like Buddha, Lao Tzu, Socrates, or the Dali Lama.
I did not have much spiritual direction in my life, but I was looking for peace, inner freedom, and happiness. So I got into eastern spirituality, new age beliefs, meditation, and self-help. I hoped there was more to life than what I understood there to be, but I never considered the Christian faith. I thought of it as just religion, not spiritual.
In my dormitory in Western Michigan where I was in college, my roommate and I talked with two guys who explained that Jesus was the way to God. When I understood what they were saying, I got angry. I said, “Are you kidding me? Are you that narrow-minded to think you have the only way to God?” I walked out on them.
Later I moved to Fort Collins, Colorado and lived in a dormitory there. A girl named Meredith and I talked. When she told me that she believed in the Bible, I couldn’t believe it. I was not kind or gentle, and I ended up making Meredith cry. How many times have you talked to someone about Christ who rejected what you said? Remember God may be pursuing that person to catch up with him later! This was true of me.
