Does not wisdom call?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
“To you, O men, I call,
and my cry is to the children of man.
O simple ones, learn prudence;
O fools, learn sense.” - Proverbs 8:1, 4-5 ESV
I called you so often, but you wouldn’t come. I reached out to you, but you paid no attention. - Proverbs 1:24 NLT
But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears. - Zechariah 7:11 NIV
I have a problem with headphones. I don’t wear them. I just don’t like my ears covered. So I don’t understand very well how people go through life listening to something I can’t even hear.
We had a teenage guest at our house, and I wanted to speak to him. So I told him, “Take off your headphones.”
His innocent response was “Why?” As far as he was concerned, it was fine to be listening to his own private program or music.
“Because I want to talk to you,” I said. So he obligingly removed his headphones for me. I just wanted to acquaint our guest with the possibilities for his next meal: French toast, eggs he might want to make himself, chicken and stuffing, a cheese and yellow squash casserole, or some turkey. I had a project on my mind and would be leaving soon, so my communication would help him fill his stomach when he got hungry.
Aren’t we so often like this teenage guest? God says, “Take off your headphones.” And we ask, “Why?” We have our mind on something else, and God can surely wait. But why does God want to talk to us? To tell us what is good! He has food stored up for our souls, rich in nutrients and delicious. Will we uncover our ears and pay attention?
