“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven, and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” – Malachi 3:10
I was only about four years into my walk with Christ. I was married with one son, David, and Jean was expecting our second child, Lois. I was also in professional school and (somehow) came up with the inconvenient conviction to live debt free—meaning no loans for school or anything else. We had already made the commitment that Jean would be home with our kids, so I was the sole “breadwinner.”
To be sure, we had Biblical reasons for our convictions and could point those out chapter and verse. We were living the life of faith, but with the Biblical parameters we embraced, we were painting ourselves into a “financial corner.”
Then David, age one, became deathly sick with a rare childhood disease. Miraculously he survived, but, being without insurance, we were saddled with monthly payments for hospital and doctor bills. That’s when we listened to a Sunday message by John Hopler about tithing! Wonderful timing! Prior to this, we had occasionally given money to the church and pastors, but now we had one more Biblical precept with which to wrestle. Well, figuring we had nothing to lose and a lot to gain, we decided to “test” God (as He invites in Malachi 3:10). We began tithing and never looked back.
That was over 35 years ago. The test results are in, and God passed! In ways unimaginable—and not just financial—God has opened the windows of heaven and poured out His blessing on us! Christian, if you’re wrestling with tithing or giving to God, “test” Him and start now. You’ll see the same results!
