The Shocking Gift

Posted by Dawn Bovenmyer on

When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, “Go, take for yourself an adulterous wife and children of unfaithfulness, because the land is guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the Lord.”  – Hosea 1:2 NIV

Wow! God’s instructions to his prophet Hosea were shocking! Marry a whore and name the children born by her names condemning Israel’s idolatry? Certainly this would be one of the last things Hosea would have expected for his assignment as God’s prophet.

This reminds me of C. S. Lewis’s description of his Christ-figure Aslan in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: “He’s wild, you know. Not like a tame lion.”

Our God does some very unlikely, yes, even shocking things at times. Imagine for just a moment some utterly amazing facets of God. He is all powerful and all-knowing, and as such, is the Creator of the universe who shockingly brought all things into existence with mere words from His mouth.

You only have to read through the Bible to see, time after time, astounding and shocking things that the wild “Lion of Judah” has done.

The most shocking, however, reveals His equally strong heart of love. For out of His yearning to rescue this shattered world, broken by sin and rebellion, He made an amazing and fateful decision. He would send His own Son, not as a conquering, vindictive warrior, but as a humble baby born into a poor, common family. Baby Jesus would grow up to become what our world truly needed: a suffering Savior fully able to take upon Himself the sins of the world—your sins and mine!

“He paid a debt He did not owe; I owed a debt I could not pay... Christ Jesus paid the debt that I could never pay.” A shocking gift to be humbly and gratefully received!
