Why Do I Feel Guilty? - 4

Posted by Rob Gerber on

Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.  – Romans 5:1 NLT

How often do you feel like this? “I turned away from God, but then I was sorry. I kicked myself for my stupidity! I was thoroughly ashamed of all I did in my younger days” (Jeremiah 31:19 NLT).

But look how God responds in the next verse: “‘Is not Israel still my son, my darling child?’ asks the Lord. I often have to punish him, but I still love him... I long for him and surely will have mercy on him’" (Jeremiah 31:20 NLT).

When we look at ourselves, we can use words like sorry, stupid and ashamed. But God uses words like son, darling, love, long for and mercy. The reason is that God’s opinion of you is based on who you are, not on what you do.

When you accepted Christ, God’s grace made you His kid. Nothing will ever change that. God is the perfect dad. He loves you completely and totally. He disciplines you but then chooses to forget your mistakes. He likes to be with you. He gave everything He had to win you back.

What this means is that God is always glad to see you, regardless of how you are doing. It’s a little like a phone call at dinner time. If it’s a phone solicitor, I can get grumpy and wish they would go away. I really don’t want to talk to them. But if it’s my good friend, I’m excited to talk, even if it is dinner time.

Don’t see yourself as a phone solicitor in God’s dinner hour. His grace made you His kid, and He’s always glad to see you.
